Dr. Paul Levi, DMD
The maintenance of peri-implant health begins with the planning and eventual placement of an implant. A firm understanding of the prosthetic design of the final restoration that will be fabricated must be visualized before the implant fixture is placed. Three dimensional positioning of an implant must be taken into consideration when the implant(s) is/are being placed.
The techniques needed by the clinician and by the patient to debride and clean the biofilm from the implant prosthesis will also be discussed. Special emphasis will be made about the need to inform patients about implants, their design and the need to motivate them to be as concordant and thorough with the plaque removal on an implant crown as they are with their natural dentition.
1. Considerations to be taken by clinicians prior to placing implants:
a. Bone morphology
b. Morphology of the final prosthesis
2. How is peri-implant defined?
3. Who is responsible for maintaining peri-implant health?
4. What preconceived ideas patients have regarding implants and where do they obtain their information?
5. Techniques for the clinician help preserve peri-implant health.
6. Techniques for the patient to maintain peri-implant health.
