Periodontal diseases and peri-implant diseases that are infections must be considered systemic diseases. This includes gingivitis, periodontitis, peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. The 2017 Classification System takes this into consideration and is designed to assist periodontal health providers in conveying an understanding of the various periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions to the public, physicians, general dentists, dental hygienists, and to dental specialists.
Course Goals and Learning Objectives:
• Explain the newest classification system of periodontal and peri-implant diseases
• Gain an understanding through a thorough periodontal examination that periodontal diseases affect the systemic health of the patients and that systemic diseases affect the intensity of periodontal diseases.
